Scott Statham is Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Freeport McMoRan Inc. Freeport is a leading international mining company with headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. It is one of the world’s largest publicly traded copper producers, and operates large, long-lived and geographically diverse copper, gold and molybdenum assets around the world.
Scott is responsible for litigation, environmental, water and state and local government affairs within the legal department. Scott served as Deputy General Counsel from 2015-2019, and Assistant General Counsel from 2010-2015.
Prior to coming to Freeport, he was Senior Counsel Litigation and Environmental at ConocoPhillips in Houston. He began his litigation career at Vinson & Elkins, and practiced in Houston as a litigation associate and then partner from 1987-2008. Scott has tried cases as first and second chair counsel, and served as national and regional coordinating counsel in personal injury, product liability, toxic tort, environmental, pharmaceutical, biomedical and class action litigation. He has argued cases in state and federal appeals courts, and was trained as a mediator in 2001.
Scott earned his JD from the University of Houston College of Law in 1987, graduating Summa Cum Laude and as a member of the Order of the Coif. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in management in 1984.
